Why do we pinch people who are not wearing green on St. Paddy's day

This blog is for all my neighbors who live in the Katy-Fulshear Area. This is an American tridition started in the 1700s. People thought that if you wear green it made you invisable to Leprechauns, which is good because Leprechauns would pinch anyone they could see. So it was done to remind you to wear green.

Construction begins on new animal shelter in the Katy Area

As reported by Ultimate Katy, The Katy area is getting a new animal shelter. If you live in the Katy-Fulshear area, and love animals, this is a great article. I have a Shih Tzu and she is a menmer of the family. It is amazing how much you can love a little dog. Precious weighs a whole 7lbs. and is spoiled rotten. (LOL)

Even though continuous rain and cold weather have delayed construction on a new animal shelter, crews are now working on the million-dollar facility.

Kappy Muenzer, executive director of Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP), said the concrete has been poured for the foundation and work is progressing on the expanded 20,000-square-foot animal shelter being built in the Katy area at 17555 Katy Freeway near Barker Cypress Road.

"We are excited," Muenzer said. "Construction time is 10 months so we hope to be in the new shelter by November."

Designed by PBK Architects, the $7 million facility will be built on 3.5 acres and will include open space outdoors for animals. Contractor Gilbane Building Company is leading the work.

A capital campaign was established to raise the money for the shelter, which is needed to serve the growing number of homeless cats and dogs. In addition to the $7 million needed to build the shelter, CAP leaders are establishing a $2 million endowment for the agency. So far, $5.5 million has been raised and fundraising efforts are ongoing.

Featured in the new shelter will be real-life rooms for dogs decorated to resemble a home that will showcase the animals, Muenzer said, adding that the home setting helps increase the chances of adoption. About 3.5 acres of land around the shelter will be used for dogs to play and frolic outside. Separate rooms for cats and dogs will be set up as well as a children's library, a cafe, volunteer area and office space for staff.

Staff and volunteers at CAP have outgrown their current 6,000-square-foot facility located at 11925 Katy Freeway. CAP serves between 12,000 - 13,000 animals each year.

Annabelle Leslie Hill

The Royer Team has a new member to the family. Annabelle Leslie Hill was born on March 11th at 9:33 pm. Annabelle weighed in at 7lbs. 8oz. and was 20 inches. She is beautiful with a head full of blonde hair. This is Polly and my first grand daughter. We are so excited that Mom and baby are doing fine.

Harley's Helpers assists children with cancer, families

The Katy community always is there to lend a helping hand.

It’s hard enough to have a family member suffer from cancer, but it can be even more devastating to watch a child battle the disease.

“It’s such a horrific and traumatic thing to go through,” said Dana Ruppert, who lost her two-year-old grandson to neuroblastoma in July.

“The parents literally lose their jobs because someone has to watch their children; some of them lose their homes; and the reality is, there’s a really high chance they’re going to lose their children.”

That’s why Harley’s Helpers Angel Ministry is hosting a multi-family garage sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at First United Methodist Church at Avenue A and Fifth Street. To read more click link below.

New Grand Daughter

Just got back from the hospital visiting our brand new Grand Daughter. Amanda (our youngest daughter) and Travis Hill are the proud parents of Annabelle Leslie Hill. She was born yesterday at 9:33pm, and she weighed 7lbs 8 oz. and is 20 in. long. Mother and baby are doing fine. She is beautiful (of course being her Grand Father had nothing to do with it.) and has blonde hair. Amanda went to Katy High School and Travis went to Katy Taylor (we don't hold it against him LOL) and live in Cinco Ranch. We live about 6 minutes away so I don't think we will spoil her that much. (Polly says "yea right") Pictures to follow.

Cinco Ranch Girls Soccer clinches district championship

Cinco Ranch clinched the Dist. 17-5A girls soccer title Tuesday night as the Cougars rallied in the second half for a 2-1 win over Seven Lakes on the Spartans’ home field.

Down 1-0 with less than 15 minutes left, Amy Brodueur tied the game with a goal and with five minutes to go Maddie Nichols hit the game-winner. Hayley Tiernay and Lauren Piritz each had assists.

Cinco Ranch, which tied Mayde Creek 0-0 last Friday, improved to 8-0-1 in district and 16-4-2 overall. The Cougars haven’t lost a game since a Jan. 29 non-district match with The Woodlands. Seven Lakes fell to 4-5 in district and 12-6-2 for the year.

The Cougars close out their regular season Friday with a home game against Katy.

Students from Katy Independent School District's Seven Lakes High School took home the Academic Decathlon 5A State Championship, capturing two gold medals and one silver medal at last weekend’s tournament at San Jacinto North College.

The phenomenal win marks the highest score in Seven Lakes’ history, making the team a favorite for the National Championship. The team will represent the state of Texas at the United States Academic Decathlon tournament, April 21-25, in Omaha, NE.

Our youngest daughter Amanda Hill and her husband Travis Hill, who live in Cinco Ranch Katy TX., is due today, but so far nothing. Dr. will induce on Thursday if she does not have it before then. We are on pins and needles waiting. They did not want to know the sex, so we are all waiting. I don't care about the sex as long as it is healthy and both mother and baby are fine.

The Katy Library, 5414 Franz Road, opens its Teen Room every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. Inside the library's meeting room, teens can hang out with friends, chat, eat snacks, play games, watch a movie or use a laptop.

Called the Chill Zone, the Teen Room is open to kids ages 12 - 18. Parents don't need to stay with their teenagers but will be required to pick up kids at the appropriate time.

On Mondays, the library is open until 7 p.m. and on Wednesdays it's open until 8 p.m. so your teens could also hang out in the main library reading magazines, studying or using computers.

The Teen Room is open regularly except next week, March 15-19, due to Spring Break.

Also this week the Katy Library is hosting Teen Tech Week which features an Internet scavenger hunt. Kids ages 12-18 can answer these questions and send in your responses to kt@hcpl.net by March 14 for a chance to win a $25 Best Buy gift card.

To be eligible you'll have to be able to pick up the prize in person if you win.

Is KISD ready to start an International Baccalaureate program?

A district committee is hammering out the final details of what it will take to implement the rigorous International baccalaureate program in Katy ISD in terms of construction costs, transportation services and delivery of instruction.

The board approved a proposal in September authorizing the steering group to proceed with designing a plan to convert the aging Wolfe Elementary School, located at 502 Addicks-Howell Road, into an institution with the internationally-renowned curriculum.

“We are still making progress towards the April recommendation,” Marcy Canady, Assistant Superintendent for School and Community Engagement, told trustees during a Feb. 22 board meeting.

“We definitely want to bring a solid recommendation to the board that is cutting edge but doable,” she said.

Canady said the program design committee anticipates completing a final report at the end of March. The report would include data on enrollment and admission criteria, transportation services, curriculum alignment, staffing needs, timelines, facility design and cost estimates, she said.

The group has been meeting twice a week in lengthy sessions running from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. to develop a recommendation, Canady said. The committee has made progress but a lot of work remains to be done, she said.

“Transportation service has been a huge topic for this committee,” Canady said. “We are now on our third round of looking at transportation options.”

The group weighed several factors to narrow down potential options in creating a concrete transportation plan. To help determine what level of services to provide for the facility’s ridership, the committee looked at bell schedule options, equity considerations and costs.

Allowing classes to start at 9 a.m. is one alternative being considered. Another potential component of a plan would involve central pick-up and drop-off sites, similar to the Metro park-and-ride services. School officials say this would lower the number of buses transporting students to the facility.

Trustees responded enthusiastically to the plans praising Canady and the committee for their hard work. But several members of the board had questions about how the transportation glitches can be worked out.

For example, Trustee Robert Shaw said the pick-up and drop off concept causes a concern for student safety. Trustee Joe Adams wanted to find out how other institutions are solving the issue.

Canady said the committee is not if sure the central pick-up would work out and that it was only being considered at this time. She said in researching what others are doing, the district learned that some IB institutions do not provide any transportation at all.

Plans for the instructional program are also shaping up, Canady said. District officials attended an International Baccalaureate Diploma training program from Feb. 28 to Mar. 2 to learn more about the challenges.

The program would include core academic programs, fine arts as well as instruction in a choice of several foreign languages including Spanish, French, Mandarin Chinese, and German.

“Spanish is the language of choice and will be offered from kindergarten through 12th grade,” Canady said.

The other languages would only be available at the secondary level, she said. Art and music will round out the curriculum.

Staffing the program with instructors that have expertise in IB instruction is another issue the district will have to contend with. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the IB program serves more than 2,000 schools in about 125 countries worldwide, school officials said.

At this time, the cost estimates for operation of the program are projected to be about $7.3 million per year at the secondary level. In comparison, a traditional high school costs about $10.2 million per year to operate and a junior high runs about $4.5 million, Canady said.

The price is lower because of factors such as the omission of extracurricular programs such as athletics and band, she said.

The committee has two more meetings on March 9 and March 10 before finalizing its recommendation to present during the board’s April workstudy meeting.
